Blepharoplasty
What is a blepharoplasty?
This procedure involves the removal of excess upper lid (or less commonly lower lid excess) skin. Excess muscle and fat can also be removed. Generally the results of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty are more predictable and more dramatic as compared to lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty can be performed for both functional and cosmetic reasons.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) for facial and eyelid spasm
What is Botox?
Botox™ is a purified toxin that is used to weaken muscles by blocking nerve impulses transmitted from the nerve endings of the muscles. It is delivered by an injection to the overacting muscles.

What is Botox used for?
Botox can be used on the face to temporarily treat:
- Blepharopspasm (squeezing of eyelids)
- Hemifacial spasm
- Excessive tearing
- Facial twitch
- Enhancing facial aesthetics (reducing crow’s feet and frown lines).
When should it be avoided?
Botox ® treatment is generally not recommended if you:
- Are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX ®
- Had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as Dysport ®
- Have a skin infection at the planned injection site
- Are pregnant
- Have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome).
- Have had recent surgery on your face or are planning surgery in the proceeding 3-6 months
- Have weakness of your forehead muscles, such as trouble raising your eyebrows
- Have drooping eyelids
- Are breast-feeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if BOTOX or BOTOX Cosmetic passes into breast milk

How Botox is administered?
- The injection site will vary, depending on the problem areas.
- No anaesthesia is required.
- The surgeon cleans and marks the site of injection.
- The medicine is injected under the skin or into the muscle, using a very fine needle.
- You can resume activities immediately.
- Maximum effect is seen at 2 weeks post injection and can last for 3-4 months.
Botox for aesthetic purposes?
Botox can be used as a non-surgical, cosmetic treatment for moderate/severe frown lines. It has also proven to be a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles.
Medicare does not contribute to the cosmetic use of Botox.
Facial and lip enhancement using fillers?
A filler is an inert substance (commonly hyaluronic acid) which is injected into depressions and wrinkles around the eyelids and face. It can also be used to enhance and to fill the lips. Common areas treated by Dr. Pakrou include the lips, tear trough area below the eyes, and the lines between the nose and the mouth (nasolabial folds). Other areas that often benefit from fillers are the midface (to plump up and lift the midface) and the cheekbones. There are many fillers on the market and Dr. Pakrou will discuss the best options based on the desired outcomes.
Some fillers are enhanced with rejuvenating compounds and factors, which over time can improve the quality and radiance of the skin. Most fillers are temporary and results last between 6-12 months based on the product used, and the area being treated. Most of the fillers used can also be dissolved if the desired outcome is not achieved.
